Dumortierite was first described in 1881 for an occurrence in Chaponost, in the Rhône-Alps of France and named in honour of the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier. Deep blue dumortierite is also called the "blue denim stone."

Dumortierite is a very rare aluminum borate silicate mineral that typically forms in high temperature and aluminium rich regional metamorphic rocks and found in the form of masses, small prismatic crystals, or as fibrous inclusions within quartz.
